Free tax help available for seniors through April 18

(Cherry Hill, N.J.) – With tax season upon us, Cherry Hill is once again partnering with the AARP to offer Township seniors free tax-preparation services twice a week beginning today, and continuing through April 18.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday and Friday, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will be at Town Hall to assist residents ages 55 and up in preparing their 2016 state and federal tax returns, as well as Homestead Rebate and Property Tax Reimbursement forms.

No appointments are necessary; however, valid photo ID is required. Visitors will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents should note that the Municipal Building is closed on Friday, April 14, and no tax-prep session will be held.

“Preparing your tax return can be complicated and time-consuming, and hiring an accountant can be expensive, especially for seniors living on fixed incomes,” said Mayor Chuck Cahn. “I’m proud that we can once again provide residents with this valuable service at no cost.”

The AARP and its dedicated volunteers have helped Cherry Hill seniors prepare their annual tax returns for free for more than a decade. Thousands of residents have received assistance, including more than 250 who took advantage of the service in 2016.

Nationally, the AARP estimates that it has helped nearly 50 million low- and middle-income Americans since the program’s inception in 1968.

All tax-help sessions will take place in the N. John Amato Council Chambers (Room 208) in the Cherry Hill Township Municipal Building, 820 Mercer St. Electronic filing and direct deposit services will be available to help expedite seniors’ returns.

Complex returns such as those involving businesses, rental income, multiple capital gains, will not be prepared through this service.

Residents should come prepared with a copy of their 2015 return, as well as all relevant tax statements, receipts and forms; their Social Security card or SSA-1099; and their PTR form, if one was received in the mail.

For more information, residents can contact the AARP by calling (888) AARP-NOW, or visit www.AARP.org/taxaide. Additional questions can be directed to the Recreation Department at (856) 488-7868 or Recreation@chtownship.com.
