(Cherry Hill, N.J.) – Mayor Chuck Cahn completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Wednesday, Aug. 20, donating to the ALS Association and passing the challenge onto Township Council President David Fleisher, Cherry Hill Police Chief Bud Monaghan, and friends Sid and Jeff Brown before dousing himself in ice-cold water.

Mayor Cahn was originally challenged by Evesham Mayor Randy Brown. To view video of Mayor Cahn’s Ice Bucket Challenge, click here.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a degenerative neurological disorder that affects muscle function. Patients suffer from a progressive loss of muscle control and may become paralyzed in late stages of the disease. While some drugs have been shown to slow the disease’s progression, there is no cure.

“ALS is a devastating disease, and I’m proud to join with the thousands of other people across the globe who are coming together to raise awareness and funds for research that will someday, I hope, lead to a cure,” Mayor Cahn said. “I encourage everyone to get behind this cause, ice bucket or not. Go online to make a donation, or to simply learn more about ALS.”

Several Township employees and Council members have taken the challenge this week, including Council President Fleisher, Councilwoman Carole Roskoph, and numerous Township employees.

From July 29 to Aug. 21, the ALS Association received more than $41.8 million in donations, compared to $2.1 million raised in the same time period last year. To donate to the cause, or to learn more about ALS and the ALS Association, visit www.alsa.org.
